Small House, But Not Tiny

Old Neglected Small House Restored

Restored CabinAt 700 square feet, this house is not considered tiny by today’s standards. It is small which is a suitable size for many people looking to downsize their life.

This small building has been restored into a gorgeous cabin.

The idea for these types of homes is to conserve, restore, protect, and remodel buildings that have been neglected. Essentially, it’s recycling a building that would otherwise remain uninhabited or torn down.

The building was a neglected property in Idaho and has been rebuilt for the purpose of becoming a permanent rural home or a vacation home.
The nearest neighbor is, at least, five miles away.

small cabinThe house setting is in a previously used farmers field. It has clear views of the fields all the way to the mountains.

About the building:

The main floor consists of a good size master bedroom with a large bathtub. The master bedroom comprises approximately 40% of the structure.

The bedroom is at one end of the house, and the kitchen is at the other. In the middle is the living area.

There is a large deck just outside the home.

There are lots of big windows to take advantage of all the gorgeous views, including the mountain range.

There is a decent sized loft bedroom on the opposite end of the house to the master bedroom that is accessible by a ladder. The loft has two windows, one that is a sufficient size to take advantage of the view.

Loft BedroomThe house is completely off-grid which is understandable because of the location.

This place would make the perfect home for someone looking for seclusion, and a relaxing stress-free way of living.

I especially love the idea that they’ve taken a long neglected building and made it into something inviting and livable. Finding a structurally sound old building and transforming it into a home space is great for the environment and would provide the owner something to be proud of.

Rent A Tiny Rustic Cabin

A Tiny Rustic A-Frame Cabin For Rent

Outside ViewHere is a tiny house that you can rent for one night, one week, a month, or longer.

If you’ve thought about giving off-grid (roughing it) a try, this one will be of interest to you.

What you get is a unique vacation experience.

This A-frame location is in Gasquet, California. It is deep in the Northern California redwoods and is part of a remote, off-grid village. The nearest neighbor is a Buddhist Hermitage about a mile away.

Nearby sights to see include:

  • Jedediah Smith Park, home of Stout Grove and other beautiful redwood hikes. The entrance to the park is approximately a 34-minute drive.
  • Crescent City is approximately 50 minutes.

If you like nature and a quiet thoroughly relaxing time, you’ll love this place.

If you want to experience living rustic, you’ll love this place.

Within the ecovillage, you’ll find chickens, dogs, frogs, cats, permaculture gardens, and everything to do with sustainability.

Not only will you enjoy peace and quiet, but you’ll also experience living in a small space and sustainable living.

The inside:
Bed

  • There is one bathroom with a composting toilet.
  • The one bed is a futon.
  • There is no electricity, but there are a flashlight and lantern for your use.
  • There is no phone, GPS, or internet service.

The bathhouse has a toilet and a shower.

The outside:

  • There are the resident domestic animals that include three dogs, cats, goats, and chickens.
  • As the location is remote, you may see one or many of various forest animals such as chipmunks, foxes, black bears, birds, and more.
  • There is no kitchen in the cabin. However, there is a shared outdoor kitchen.
  • You’ll find numerous trails that run through the 160-acre property, and lots of forestry roads to explore.
  • You’ll also find a swimming hole nearby.

I would suggest reading through all the information that they offer. The house and location are very rustic.

If you aren’t into remote and rustic, this may not be the vacation for you.

If you are adventurous, love nature, and rustic (or want to give it a try), then this would be the ideal place for you to vacation.

18 Steps To Build A Tiny Home

18 Steps For Building A Tiny House

Information about how to build a tiny house can be extensive. There is quite a bit of information.

You will find tiny house workshops and tiny house blogs contain most of the information you may be looking for.

Building Bundle Blitz

For the purpose of this article and keeping it short, we’ll provide you with general guidelines.

1. The first thing you should do is decide on a design.

If you are new to construction or on a tight budget, you should keep it simple.

You’ll probably want to avoid dormer windows, complex roof lines, porches, and excessive ornamental features.

There are pre-designed plans to choose from or you may choose to design your own using a program like SketchUp.

Decide if you want to build your home on wheels or on a permanent foundation.

Once your design is set, you’ll need to figure out the materials and tools you’ll need.

2. Find the location where you and you’re home will reside.

If you want a house on wheels, you’ll need to get a trailer that is appropriate for a tiny house. These houses are heavier than a traditional recreational vehicle therefore they need a heavy-duty trailer.

The point of a building a house on a trailer is flexibility of location. There are many options available such as RV parks, the backyard of friends or family, or land that you own as long as your local codes allow it. And you’ll be able to move you and your house whenever and where ever you wish.

If your house will be on a foundation, you’ll need to find a property that permits tiny dwellings.

In some cases, the location you choose to live at may not be suitable for your home while you build it. If this is the case, you’ll need to find an alternate location for your house while you build it.

3. Floor.

The first thing you’ll work on is the floor on the trailer, or the foundation for a more permanent home.

4. Prepare for the utilities.

The drains and wiring that will run through the flooring should be installed at this point.

5. Framing the walls.

Put up the walls and sheath them.

6. Framing the roof.

Beginners should make sure they’ve chosen a simple roof. Roof framing can be a little tricky so you will want to keep it as simple and easy as possible.

After the roof has been framed and sheathed, you’ll put on roofing material to keep the rain out.

7. Wrap the house.

Wrap the house frame. Wrapping keeps the house dry and protected from the elements.

8. Install the windows and the doors.

9. Add the exterior cladding, trim, paint and caulk to keep water out of the walls.

10. Plumbing.

At this point, you are ready put in the drain and supply plumbing pipes.

Then the water heater can be installed.

The waste and potable water tanks can be installed.

11. Electricity.

Rough in electric by running wire through small holes that are drilled in the framed walls. Connect the wires inside junction, outlet, and switch boxes that are set in the walls.

If you aren’t absolutely sure what you are doing with the electrical installation, it may be best to have a professional do the installation. Improperly installed wiring could be a fire hazard.

12. Insulation.

There are various types of insulation that can be used. Do the research, talk to the experts to determine the best type of insulation for your climate and type of home.

13. Interior sheathing.

Once all the plumbing and electrical is done, you will add wood or drywall to the framed walls.

14. Trim and finishing touches.

Now it’s time for the finishing carpentry. That includes adding the cabinets, built-ins, and trim.

15. Paint.

Paint or stain the walls to match your décor.

16. Finish electric and plumbing.

Add the electrical outlets, switches, and fixtures.

Finish the plumbing by installing faucets, toilet, and other fixtures.

17. Finish the flooring.

18. Furniture, appliances and decorations.

The last thing before moving in is to bring in the furniture, appliances and home décor that you have chosen for your new home.

This is all just a rough guideline for how to build a tiny house. Each building experience will be similar. This guide will give you an idea of what to expect and at what point to expect to do it.

Building A Tiny Home

Getting Started Building A Tiny Home

Yellow HouseAnyone new or has experience with the tiny house movement likes to have answers to the same questions. The following are some of the most common questions and their answers.

What is a tiny house?

There is no set in stone rule when it comes to the size of a tiny house.

Most people consider a house that is 500 square feet or smaller as tiny.

A small house is considered to be up to 1000 square feet.

The size of the house you choose for yourself should depend on what you need and want.

A tiny house can be on wheels or a foundation. A small house will need to be on a foundation.

How to choose the right tiny house?

The first thing you should do is research.

There are lots of places online and offline to gather information.

Ask builders and designers if you have specific questions that you can’t find the answer elsewhere.

Building or buying.

If you decide to buy, you’ll need to contact a real estate agent or a tiny house builder to help with your search.

Find designers and builders in your area.

  • Read reviews for the designer and builder to make sure they are reputable.

If you decide to build the house yourself, you’ll need house plans to follow. If you are new to construction, you should register and attend a tiny house workshop in your area.

These workshops allow you to meet other like-minded tiny house enthusiasts and the presenters teach you:

  • How to plan to build.
  • How to design a tiny house.
  • How to choose a trailer.
  • How to set up systems.
  • How to do framing and sheathing.
  • How to do roofing.
  • How to install windows and doors.
  • How to install siding and trim.
  • How to finish the interior.
  • How to get rid of clutter so you can live tiny.

Building a house that is safe and durable takes knowledge and skill.

Three Tiny HousesDo you have the place to build your tiny home? It is not always possible to build it at the location where you will reside.

Do you have or will you need to buy some or all of the tools that you’ll need to build the house?

If you decide to have the house built, you’ll need to contact a builder to discuss your design and the building process.

Allow a minimum of three months from start to completion when working on the house full-time. If the house is built on a part-time basis, it will take considerably longer.

Planning to build.

Create a budget to keep track of the money you want to spend. Use it to keep track of all the expenditures.

Find the land where you want to live.

  • Will you buy land?
  • Will you rent land?
  • Will you park your home in the backyard of friends or family?
  • Will you park your home in an RV park?

Make sure that the local rules and regulations allow for a tiny house.

Make sure that a tiny house is what you want to live in.

If you aren’t sure and want to give living tiny a try first.

  • There are tiny house rentals that you can rent short or long term.
  • Buy or rent an RV – a motor home, a 5th wheel or a trailer.

If you don’t want to rent, you could consider buying a tiny house. There are many for sale in online and offline classified ads.

Live in the home until you are sure that residing in a modest home is the right choice for you.

Insurance

Insurance for a tiny home can sometimes be a little challenging. You may want to contact insurance companies and gather information before beginning to build or searching to buy. There are insurance companies that insure very small buildings, but they aren’t as common as traditional house insurance. You’ll want to contact them and compare prices and coverage.

Mortgage or Pay-In-Full

Although the cost of tiny houses is considerably less than what you would pay for a traditional home, there are still costs that you will incur. If you need to borrow money to buy or build your home, you’ll need to research for the best terms and interest rates.

If you are building the home yourself or having it built, be sure you have a good understanding of what it will cost you from start to finish. You’ll need to factor in all the tools you’ll need to buy, the cost of house plans, the cost of land, the materials, the equipment, the interior finishing touches, and the furniture and appliances.

Saving Money

In some cases, it is less expensive to buy a tiny house but you may not be able to find what you want.

Another option may be to purchase a partially built building. Buying a partially built structure will also save you time as you will have a head-start.

Either of these options will save you money if you don’t already have the necessary tools to build a house yourself.

If you are building, you could consider using recycled and scavenged material.

  • Recycle and scavenge with caution.
  • Not all materials are good enough quality for your home.
  • Allow extra time for your build as it will probably take more time to find what you need.

What will it cost?

MoneyThe cost of building a home varies.

If you can find all or most of your materials for free or at a highly discounted price, the final cost of your home will be much less than if you bought all your supplies from a retail store.

The size and design of your home will affect price as well. The more detailed and elaborate, the higher the costs will be.

On an average, a modest tiny house will cost approximately $20,000 to $25,000 in the USA (a little more in Cdn dollars).

Possible locations.

Zoning regulations and building codes will play a big part on the final location of your tiny house.

As every location has different laws, it is up to you as the individual that will be building to find out what is allowed and not allowed for your local area.

Places for consideration could include:

  • Land you own. Using land you own may not work if zoning and building restrictions are already in place and do not allow for a tiny structure.
  • The backyard of friends or family. Locating your home in someone’s backyard would most likely be a temporary arrangement and shouldn’t cause too many problems. If the intention is to reside there long-term, it may be more complicated to arrange.
  • An RV park. As tiny houses gain in popularity, more RV parks are allowing them.
  • A tiny house community. There are some tiny house communities throughout the country. More are in the plans.

Single Home Buyers and Tiny Houses

Tiny House Design Plans for Single Home Buyers

HouseIt can be difficult for a single person to buy a house. With the rising cost of housing, it has become increasingly difficult. Fewer and fewer single people have been able to make the leap from renting to owning. Until now!

If you are willing to compromise (in a good way) on the amount of living space, you can own your home.

Over a number of years, there has been a growing trend towards living tiny. There are numerous benefits to buying or building a little house that both single people, married people, and families have realized.

There is a holiday special with great savings you may want to take a look at.
Builder Bundle Blitz Sale

The pros far outweigh the cons.

Cons:

  • The living area is small; in some cases, much tinier than traditional homes.
  • * Some locations have restrictions on the size of houses allowed in certain areas. You’ll need to research the rules and regulations for your location of choice. There may be some restrictions when it comes to small houses.

Pros:

  • The cost of living is less than what it costs in a large traditional home. When there is less space to maintain (heat in the winter, cooling in the summer), the utility costs are less.
  • The cost of buying or building a very small home is less than what it costs to buy or construct a large home. You would be able to completely own your home (no mortgage) much faster.
  • You have more choices for location of your house. *
  • You have the option to build on a foundation or on-wheels so that you can move anytime you want, anywhere you want. You could even take your house with you on a vacation.
  • As the cost of living is considerably less than what you accustomed to, you will have more money to enjoy life. You’ll be able to afford more and nicer vacations. You’ll have more money to save for education, retirement, or the things you love to do on a regular basis.
  • Small houses take very little time to tidy and clean. That means you’ll have more time to enjoy life instead of spending hours cleaning your house.
  • A small house doesn’t require a large lot unless that is what you would like. As with inside the house, when there is less area to maintain, it takes less time for upkeep leaving you more time for what matters.

All this means that the option of tiny houses is the best decision for any single person, married person, couples or small families. There is much more to life than the cost of expensive home ownership.

These days there are many more tiny house design plans and tiny home builders than there were a few years ago. You can find designs that are very simple to luxurious and elaborate designs that rival the luxury found in larger homes.

Before buying or building, you’ll need to decide on what you need and what you want in your home. Many of the storage and living options are built into these types of homes. The reason for that is the need to make the most efficient use of the living area.

Think about the square footage that you will need to live comfortably and happily. When we say tiny, that usually means a place that is 500 square feet or smaller.

When discussing modest housing options, it could include a very small condo or apartment that is a viable option, but you would not have the outdoor space that you would with a tiny stand-alone home that you own.

The point of owning and living in a tiny house is perfect for investment purposes, saving money, saving time, and enjoying life.

Stay At Home Parent and An Affordable Home

How To Be A Stay At Home Parent

ChildIt’s not often these days for one parent to have the ability to stay at home with the children. More often than not, the family can’t afford to do without the second income. That is because of the cost of living. The cost of a mortgage or rent, the utilities and incidentals, and the cost of food adds up. We all got to have a place to live and have food on the table.

Many parents would love to be able to stay home while their kids are young. They would love to be there to witness all the momentous events and occasions. Unfortunately, too many parents miss out on the “firsts”; watching them grow and learn.

More often than not, the parents have no idea how to make it happen. How one of them can afford to become a stay at home parent, so nothing changes and no one is content with life as it is.

What if I told you it is possible?

The first thing you need to do is determine what you can afford on one salary. Start with your biggest expense and work on the plan from there.

A mortgage on a large traditional house usually takes up a good chunk of take-home pay. Lowering your mortgage payment would go a long way to easing the demand on expenses.

Consider downsizing from a large house to a small or tiny house. You will be amazed at how that one decision creates a snowball effect to reduce most of the other expenses your household incurs.

A tiny house doesn’t have to be simple. There are many plans to choose from or you could design your own tiny house to suit your exact needs.

Think about it like this, a tiny house is equivalent to an affordable home.

  • When you live in a small house, there is less square footage to heat and cool. That means considerably reduced utility costs.
  • The cost of insurance would also be less.
  • Your property tax would reduce because your house is not as large.
  • Your cost of living is reduced therefore you don’t need as much income coming in.
  • Also, you may also have more money to pay down and pay off any debts you may have.

In short, you save money with:

  • A reduced or non-existent mortgage.
  • Lower utility costs.
  • Fewer insurance fees.
  • Reduced property tax.

If you have owned your home for awhile, you may have enough equity in the house to buy a tiny house outright – meaning, no mortgage!

Also, when one parent stays at home instead of working, you’ll save money on:

  • Transportation costs – fuel and parking expenses.
  • Extras – breakfasts, lunches, coffee, gifts for co-workers, dining out or bringing home supper.
  • Luxuries – cut back or eliminate things like a manicure, a pedicure, hair highlights, a massage, and the maximum amount of cell/text messaging minutes.
  • Coupons – you could help cut the expenses of food and accessories by using coupons. One coupon on its own may not help much but when you add up all the pennies from all the coupons, it can add up to considerable savings.
  • Childcare – Childcare is expensive. Probably at the top of your expenses list.

By reducing all these expenses, you will have eliminated a good portion (perhaps all) of the need for the second income.

Making adjustments to your expenses could mean the difference between following your dream of living in an affordable home and staying home with your kids or having two incomes and not enjoying life with your children while you can.

Emergency Preparedness

Are You Prepared For An Emergency?

Emergency KitI know that this article is a little off-topic for affordable housing designs but it is a subject that applies to everyone no matter if they live in a big house or a small house. A disaster is not discriminate; it can strike anywhere at anytime.

We have all heard about the damage that is done from tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes, tropical storms, and more. We all know it can happen to anyone, at anytime. Few of us are prepared for the aftermath of a disaster if it strikes where we live.

I’ve often thought we should have an emergency kit and emergency food supplies set aside…just in case. We usually have food that doesn’t need an appliance to prepare which would last for a few days so I was never really worried about food. But what about first aid, water, and food that would last beyond a few days?

Now that we’re no longer traveling full-time in our RV and have a home, we need to get a kit together. This is especially true because we live in an area that is prone to earthquakes.

What if we are unable to get to a store?
What if amenities that we are used to going to on a daily (or every few days) for supplies were closed?

So, I started looking into how a preparedness kit is made. I had no idea where to start.
What do we need in the kit?
How do we keep the food from spoiling?
How can we store food so that would last more than a few days?

In my research, I came across a few businesses that are specific to those needs which makes things much easier to build a food preparedness kit.

I was impressed with one of these company’s. Augason Farms has managed to take a natural food source and make it so that it will be available long-term. I thought I’d share this find with you so you would have a good source for an emergency food kit too.

The following is a partial description from their dehydrated carrots:

Total Servings: 29 per can
Can Size: Large, institutional size can with lid
Net Weight: 2 lb 6 oz
Shelf Life-Unopened: Up to 25 years*
Shelf Life-Opened: Up to one year*

That is exactly what I was looking for. Something that I could place into an emergency preparedness kit and keep it there without the need to change it on a regular basis.

If you have been dreaming of downsizing to simplify your life, you’ve probably been thinking about building a tiny house to live in.

If you’re like most people, you aren’t sure how or where to start.

A workshop is your answer.

Tumbleweed is one of the oldest tiny house companies in existence today. They have a lot of knowledge and experience to pass on to you. When you attend one of their two-day workshops, you’ll learn everything you’ll need to design and build your very own very small house.

You’ll not only get all the information you will need, but you’ll also get to meet and talk to people who have been through the process of building their house.

In addition, you’ll meet other like-minded people that you will become friends with. Friends that will help each other, and to bounce ideas off of.

Tumbleweed company doesn’t offer these types of discounts very often. Most of their workshops book up quickly even at the regular price.

These are short sales opportunities. They are only available from now until the end of October 2015. I suspect they’ll book up fast at this price discount.

If this is what you want, you’ll need to hurry over and book a place in one of the selected workshops (in North Carolina, Texas, or California) and save yourself $70.

The Growth Of Tiny Houses

The Small House Market

Coutnryside HouseIt has been interesting over the past few years to see how many new tiny house companies have popped up throughout North America and beyond.

It’s interesting to see how small house designs have evolved from very simple to elaborate and luxurious.

The price range has also jumped. Although you can still get a very simple house for a decent price, there is the option to get a house the same size but with small scale luxuries.

As expected, the cost for a luxurious house is more than the expense of a simple one, but in comparison it is much less than you would pay for the same thing in a larger house.

It’s Your Choice

It’s all a matter of what you want and what you need. It’s a decision you have to make.

Do you want to live simply? Do you want or need a few luxuries? Or is your preference to live with all the luxuries on a smaller scale?

There is nothing wrong with either way. You have to do what makes you happy.

You need to live in a manner that you are most comfortable with. If that means you don’t want to give up some luxuries, that is okay.

No matter what you decide, you’ll save time and money.

I love a simple life, but I also like some luxuries. I have a combination of simple with a few luxuries.

My house is much smaller than what I used to live in. After living in a recreational vehicle and traveling for almost four years, I realized there were a few things I missed.

Here are a few things I can’t do without:

A little more storage than what you get in the typical simple tiny house is a must. There are some hobbies that I will never give up. They are my creative outlet and a big part of my relaxation. I downscaled my hobbies when I moved into a small space, but I do need the room to keep supplies.

Another must is a larger kitchen. I need the counter space to work without having to juggle food and dishes around when making a meal. And there are a few cooking items I can’t live without.

I’m a little claustrophobic. The low ceiling got to me after awhile. I need a little more head-room. And I like/need lots of natural light; this means I want/need lots of windows or big windows.

A small living room and bedroom are not a problem. As long as I have a comfortable chair to sit in and a cozy bed to sleep in, I’m good.

A small bathroom is okay. It’s not a room where I spend a lot of time.

I don’t need a deck. An outdoor mat, a small table, and comfortable outdoor chairs do fine.

Downsizing

There is no reason you would have to give up everything.

You will need to dig deep and decide what is most important to you. You’ll need to decide what you can and can’t live without.

Some decisions will be more challenging than others, but it is worth all the difficulties once you’ve made all the decisions.

Whichever type of tiny house you choose, it has to be what you will be happy with for a long time. You can build a very simple house for a minimal cost, or you can create an elaborate place. Even if what you choose is not so simple, it won’t cost you anywhere near what it would for a large house with the same luxuries.

Building a tiny house is a win-win no matter what way you choose to go.

Tiny House TV Shows

TV Shows Featuring Tiny Houses

House of Bamboo This season there are TV shows that feature tiny houses. In my area, these shows are airing on Sunday evenings. They’ve quickly become shows that I look forward to watching.

There are two that are regulars.

Tiny House Hunters

This show is about people that have made the decision to either downsize or they are first-time home buyers. The reason for the decision varies from person to person.

The show follows them through looking at three tiny pre-built houses that are for sale and ready to move into.

We learn about the people, their likes and dislikes, and about various housing styles.

The size usually ranges from less than 100 square feet to 500 square feet.

The goal of the half-hour show is for the buyer to choose one of the three houses shown to them by their real estate agent.

The show end with a quick view of the house after they have moved in and settled.

I love seeing the different types of tiny houses, the designs, the layout, and the decor. There are some unique storage solutions.

At first I thought that the real estate agents did not understand what they buyers want but then I realized that for the sake of entertainment, they are showing us a variety of styles and designs.

Some of the buyers have the intention of moving their house as needed; others intend to keep their house in one location.

http://www.hgtv.com/shows/tiny-house-hunters

Tiny House Big Living

This show features couples that want to downsize to tiny living. The couples meet with a builder, make a decision on the home they want, the design, the layout, and the features.

We follow along while the builder builds the house – from start to finish.

We learn a little about the couple. Why they are choosing this change in lifestyle, and what they want and what they need.

When the house is built and delivered, we get to see the location they’ve chosen to locate their new house.

Most times we’ll get a view of what they’ve done with the house a few weeks or months after they’ve moved in.

It’s interesting to hear why these couples have made this decision, what they prefer, and where they choose to live. The most common theme seems to be affordability, improving their finances, and to have the ability to spend more time with family.

http://www.hgtv.com/shows/tiny-house-big-living

Tiny House Builders

I haven’t seen any of these episodes yet, but I am looking forward to seeing them when they air in my area.

From the HGTV website: This show is about builder Derek Diedricksen. He creates tiny masterpiece houses using salvaged materials.

His designs are located in beautiful (and sometimes treacherous) locations.

The intent is to build the structures while making the most of the surroundings.

Unique versus traditional is always interesting.

http://www.hgtv.com/shows/tiny-house-builders

The shows are interesting because we learn about the people they feature, many different styles of houses, and the various reasons people are choosing to downsize or make their first house tiny. They pack a lot of information in these half-hour shows.

It is wonderful to see this movement gaining recognition. I have always thought that this is an excellent solution for anyone that wants a better life and lifestyle, less stress, better finances, and help to ease the drain on our environment.

They are doing an incredible job on these shows. We get to see many variations of very small houses. We get many new ideas for our homes.
And best of all, they are spreading the word about a great lifestyle.

  • Have you seen any of the shows yet?
  • What do you think about them?

Please place your comment on our Affordable Housing Facebook page. We’d love to hear what you think about the shows too.

Yurt In WA For Rent

Have you ever had the opportunity to stay in a yurt?

YurtI’ve seen them in some campsites we’ve visited. I’ve taken a peek inside. They look comfy and cozy and are quite popular during the warmer months of the year.

They are perfect for someone (or a family) that is in between tent camping and staying in a trailer. They usually have a bed, a kitchenette, and a living area. Some of them have electricity.

The following is a yurt for rent in White Salmon, WA.

The beauty of it is that it is nestled among pine and oak woods.

It’s also close to the small town for your dining and shopping enjoyment.

Previous guests have given it a 5-star rating that is always a good thing to note when looking for a vacation rental.

KitchenInside the yurt.

A yurt is usually one big room that has all the necessities you’ll need for your stay.

There is a bed. It doesn’t say whether it is a double, queen, or king size.

There is a kitchenette with a counter, a small fridge, sink, hot plate, and microwave.

That means there is electricity too so you’ll have lights when needed.

The dining area has a table and chairs.

The common area has a wood stove for chilly days and nights, a lounge chair and a futon that can accommodate two people for sleeping.

BathroomIn the barn:

There is a barn close to the yurt. The barn is where you will find a few more amenities that aren’t available in the yurt.

There is a bathroom, but it doesn’t say whether there is a shower or if there is a tub.

Wireless internet is only available in the barn.

Two extra bedrooms, one big enough to have a comfortable seating area.

Outside the yurt:

There is a deck that overlooks gorgeous views of the woods.

And a washer and dryer available to guests. They are located in the main house.

It has everything needed for a vacation. It may not be all in one building, but nothing is far away.

Yurts have been around for a very long time and only recently becoming a popular vacation option.

Tiny Houses On TV Update

Second Tiny House Show

Tiny College HouseA few days ago, I watched a second tiny house show on TV. This is the first show of the kind that is airing in my area. I know some of you may have had access to these types of show for awhile now, but this is a first for me and I’m loving the show.

The second show featured a young lady preparing to go to college. Instead of living in residence, she chose to build herself a tiny house. Her goal was for it to cost $10,000. She came close. The final tally, including furniture and appliances, came to a little over $12,000.

Would you like to take a look at some tiny house plans and designs? Click here.

She built it over a 4 to 6 month period with the help of friends and family. Much of the construction was recycled materials.

This was a smart move on her part. By building it herself, she saved lots of money. She won’t have the added expense of the cost of college housing. And she’s already got a great head-start on owning her own home.

Here’s the link if you would like to read more about the episodes.

She’s not the first person to come to the realization that this will save her money now and in the future. It’s a very mature move for someone that is in her early 20’s.

Tiny houses are popping up all over the place. People are living in them for all kinds of reasons but mostly to save money and live a better, healthier life.

These television shows are helping to get the word out and propelling it even further.

Tiny Houses On TV

Tiny House TV Show

Last Sunday I watched the first episode of the new TV show Tiny House Big Living. I was really looking forward to the show and I wasn’t disappointed.

It was the episode that featured Jenna and Guillaume from Tiny House Journey. I’ve been following them from the start of their build and through their travels that they began many months ago. It was really nice to see them on the show.

It goes to show how popular downsizing and living a simpler life is returning. People are realizing how much better simplifying their life is for the family.

It’s wonderful to see that it’s become so popular that they are making television shows about the life now.

Farmhouse
Tonight is episode two. Once again I’m finding myself looking forward to the show.

That is saying a lot. I don’t watch that much TV. There are very few shows that hold any interest for me.

I enjoy home renovation shows, cooking shows, and the odd series. This year one of the shows I’m enjoying is called Zoo.

With Tiny House Big Living, I am enjoying the life stories, the choices that they made, the building process…their journey.

I know where I’ll be tonight (it may be on another night in your location). I’ll be glued to my TV again for the next story.

I hope everyone else is enjoying the show as much as I am so it will continue.

The Yolo Cabin

Tiny Cabin In Sacramento Valley

Exterior ViewHere is a tall tiny cabin that is situated on a 400 acre farm in the Sacramento Valley, California. It’s a very impressive building from the inside to outside. It’s very different from what we normally see.

It’s very unique and I love “unique”.

The building was inspired by local water towers and lean-to sheds.
Living AreaView To Outside

They’ve incorporated a little of both into the project.

When you go up into the tower portion of the house you get a 360-degree view of the landscape.

View From Top

The main part of the house is in the lean-to section.

There isn’t a big write-up on this tiny house but the pictures say it all.

The amenities:

  • Bathroom – contains a waterless, composting toilet, sink, and a shower. The hot water comes from an on-demand heater.
  • There is a window air conditioner for really hot days.

Omaha BedroomPets are welcome but you do need to let them know ahead of time and get prior approval from the owner. Make sure to let them know what type of pet, how many, and any other information which would help them make a decision.

This tiny house seems to be in a good location that is easily accessible to other locations you may want to visit. There is a bus stop nearby, and there is access to Uber and Lyft cars.

As always, I try to find rentals with a great rating. This one has been around for a few years. The majority of reviews are five stars and good testimonials. The owner has a great response time as well should you have any questions before and during your stay. That’s always a good thing.

Big House, Small House

Are You A Big Or Small House Person?

Tiny Small HouseIt’s not always easy. Sometimes (very occasionally), I long for a larger home.

The reason is usually because of some small or short term difficulty such as when I need a little quiet time to concentrate on a task that needs to be done. My husband also works from home; that means that in our small place, we work in close proximity. He is on the phone for work a few times each day. If I have a video to make, I have to wait until he is done his calls.

When I get in that mood, I remind myself of all the work that size of house involves, how expensive it is to live in, and how it ruled my life.

For example, when we lived in a big house, I spent most of my spare time keeping it clean and tidy.

Upkeep took up quite a bit of any spare cash we managed after expenses were paid. We had very little cash left over for anything that we really wanted to do. If we wanted to take a vacation, it took forever to save up for it. In most cases, we didn’t take a vacation. Sometimes we went years without actually going anywhere special; just quick short trips near home.

We spent tons of money keeping up with the necessary renovations and upkeep over the years.

The yard work was always a chore.

Thinking about all those negatives is always enough to get me out of that mood.

Thinking about all the positives that come with living in a small place brings me back to “why” we chose this lifestyle, and how much better things are now than they were before.

It’s funny how our minds try to trick us. Wanting a little more space may be a common theme, but I would say that it comes from people who have not experienced the freedom that a small place gives them.

We’ve had both. We know and have experienced the negatives and the positives that come with both options.

We know that living in a bigger place does not mean you have more freedom. In reality, unless you have lots of money (not money that you work hard to make each and every month), you are a slave to your cost of living.

We have learned through trial and error, that it is much more pleasant to live without the worry of all the expense (time and money) that comes with a big house and a big yard.

Life is much more enjoyable when we don’t have to spend all our time and money maintaining our house.

These days we have the option of going where we want, when we want, without having to worry if we have the time and money to spare because the time and the money ARE there.

I may have the occasional longing for a bigger space, but it doesn’t last for long. All I have to do is think back to the way it was before and that kills the thought. I’ll never go back to living in a big house.

What about you? I’d love to hear your thoughts. You can’t comment on the website, but comments are welcome on the Affordable Housing Facebook page.

Tiny Homes For Seniors

Tiny As A Solution For Senior Housing

Independent Senior Housing

The dilemma of housing for aging adults has been an ongoing issue for many years. It’s very difficult find the perfect solution for everyone.

If you choose a retirement home, there is the issue of making sure that the facilities and care are at a good standard. We’ve all heard the nightmare stories.

That’s not to say that they are all the same; there are good retirement homes, and then there are some that are not so good.

How do you know you’ve chosen the right one?

In addition, with the aging population, lack of senior housing is becoming an issue.

A Good Solution

Building and living in a tiny home has been a good solution for some people, but unfortunately most of the plans and designs for this type of housing include a loft bedroom or two. The problem with this is as people get older, climbing stairs and ladders becomes more difficult.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have your parent(s) living very close? With the suitable home design, they could live in a home where they are able to keep their independence yet be close enough that you can help when needed. I would have loved to have had that solution for my parents…

There is a company in Minnesota that put some thought into the senior housing market and combined the very small housing idea with seniors in mind. They’ve come up with a design that is senior friendly and great for people with disabilities. The homes they design and build are also wheelchair accessible.

These houses can be placed in a yard, in a driveway, in a laneway, or on a street – just about anywhere that regional legalities permit.

They’ve thought of everything from water to utilities, making the house self-sufficient.

You can read all about them here.

Business is booming.

As a testament of the need and popularity of this type of housing, their business has “taken off”. They can’t build the houses fast enough to keep up with the demand.

A tiny house specific for the aging population or for someone with a disability that limits mobility, is exactly what is needed. I applaud the company for coming up with a great solution to an ongoing problem. All that’s left is for more of the municipalities to catch up with their rules and regulations.
